Life Story
I was fortunate to have been raised in a Christian home. We were very active in church, and all of my best friends were my church buddies.
Along the way I collected a number of achievements:
I played a dictionary in the third grade play.
I learned to drive a stick shift.
I learned how to iron a shirt.
Obviously quite gifted…
It was during college that I began to sense God’s call into ministry. I was attending revival services at my home church when the preacher said, “Some of you here tonight know that God is calling you into full time Christian service. You may not know what that is yet, but you know that God is calling you. You need to make that public right now.”
So I did! I walked down to the front of the church (I was wearing flip-flops and white overalls) and made a public commitment to full time ministry.
Following seminary at Southwestern in Fort Worth, TX, I served in two churches as Minister to Students – Pinelake Baptist Church in Brandon, MS, and FBC, Starkville. My first Sunday in Starkville I met a very cute redhead named Mary Ellen, and four years later we were married. (It would have been sooner, but I was a big chicken…)
One year later Mary Ellen and I packed up and headed to Las Vegas, NV as Home Mission Board Church Planters. We started a church there, and I led the Baptist Student Union at UNLV.
Our first son, Seth, was born in Las Vegas, and soon afterward we moved back to Mississippi, where I served as BSU Director for several years, first at Hinds Community College, and then at Mississippi College. Sometime in there our second son, Benjamin, was born.
In 1998 I was invited to join the staff of First Baptist, Hattiesburg as Associate Pastor. During our time here God has been actively working to bring His vision to fruition in Hattiesburg. While the church has grown in a tremendous fashion, there is still so much left to do. Our city is filled with people who are hurting, people who need God’s direction and love in their lives. It is my desire to see God move greatly to transform lives in Hattiesburg through the ministry of First Hattiesburg.
